Gunman badly injured

Palmerston North: A 30yearold man is in a serious condition in hospital after firing shots at police officers in Manawatu on Monday night, police say.

Police in Foxton said they received a report about 5.30pm on Monday about a driver and signalled for the man to stop, but he did not.

Although a pursuit was not initiated, police said the driver then came back past one of their cars and fired shots towards an officer.

The driver then abandoned his car, forced another motorist from their car and stole that vehicle.

The car was driven to Feilding, where spikes were used to stop it.

It was then driven into a parked police car at speed, while another shot was fired at a police officer.
