Women and smoking

-

There has been much said recently in all kinds of publications concerning smoking by women. Tobacconists’ reports in Timaru have shown (says a local exchange) that the luxury, or vice, or whatever it may be called, is prevalent to some extent there. But it was something of a surprise to the patrons of one of the leading tea rooms last week to see a young lady, with two young men, unconcernedly light up after the disappearance of 3 shillings’ worth of tea and cakes. The smokers were not ejected, no one complained, the roof showed no signs of falling in, and the only unusual signs of the introduction of the custom to Timaru was a cloud of rosescented smoke. — ODT, 6.1.2021.
