Romantic’s plans shattered
The tragedy of love’s young dream being rudely shattered by unsympathetic police officers was witnessed in Oamaru recently. It appears that a youth who is a jeweller’s apprentice from Christchurch, had departed from home without informing his father what his intentions were. The matter was put in the hands of the police by the lad’s employers and, in accordance with the Masters and Apprentices Act, a warrant was issued for his arrest. The police authorities traced the youth to Oamaru and found that he and a young lady, also of Christchurch, had taken furnished apartments in a house in Eden Street, and had set up housekeeping. He was arrested by Constable Abel and was brought before Mr J.M. Forester, JP, on Saturday morning, on the application of Senior Sergeant Simpson. He was remanded to Christchurch and proceeded there under escort the same day. — ODT, 10.1.1921
