Plans to climb Mt Everest

-

History proves that generally man achieves his aim, whether it be in the realm of daring or endurance. Just now the conquest of Mount Everest, the highest eminence in the world, rising in the Himalayas to a height of over 29,000ft is stimulating the imagination of British mountaineers. The conquest of Everest will call for pluck and resource, and the Royal Geographical Society, together with the Government of Tibet, is making preliminary arrangements for the ascent. Everest is known as “the inaccessible mountain” by reason of its altitude and the embargo which has long prevented the white man from even approaching its base. The Dalai Lama, or Grand Lama, has discouraged invasion for any purpose and every explorer has met insurmountable difficulties. The average altitude of Tibet is 16,000ft and the highest lake is 17,930ft. Now that the Government has agreed to cooperate, the gigantic task of ascending Everest will be rendered easier, but it is still gigantic — the most perilous ascent yet attempted by man. If no political complications arise the ascent of “the inaccessible mountain” may be attempted next year.
