Club celebrates 100 years

-

TAIERI Lakes Golf Club is celebrating its centenary in March this year.

Past and present members are invited to a celebration at the

North Taieri club on Otago Anniversary Weekend (March 2022).

The club reached its 100th birthday last year, but due to the Covid19 pandemic, celebrations were delayed a year.

Attendees are invited to dust off their golf clubs and join in a 9 or 18hole competition on the Saturday followed by an informal buffet dinner that evening where participants can learn about the history of the club and reminisce about how things used to be.

There is also an 18hole Ambrose competition on Sunday and a ninehole competition on Monday to cap off the weekend.

The club has been on its present site in Milners Rd, North Taieri, for about 50 years, before that the Taieri Golf Club (as it was known before it changed its name to Taieri Lakes Golf Club in 2011) leased five different properties.

Club president Shane Smith said the key to why the club prospered for so long across five leased sites before finding its own property was due to the camaraderie between members.

"The network of friendships and fellowship, both in and out of golf, make the club an enjoyable place to spend time.

"There has always been a team of dedicated staff, volunteers, club officials, committee members and members who invest their time and energy to make the club, course and facilities as good as possible. Without all the efforts of these people the club would not exist and prosper as well as it has been able to.

‘‘Where we are today is a testament to the efforts of all our past and present members and staff.’’

* Registration forms for the centenary can be obtained from the club manager Paul Barlow. Phone (03) 4897450, or email taierigolf@xtra.co.nz. They are also available on the club’s Facebook page.
