Hospital’s military status

92 to 95 degrees at 9:30am. On the previous day Melbourne experienced 105.1deg, and Adelaide all but 108. Sydney escaped with only 83.5, but in the country temperatures ranging between 102 and 113 degrees were fairly common.

Trentham is now the only general hospital under the control of the Defence Department, and it is probable that it will be kept in existence as long as possible. Special treatment may be obtained there to a far greater extent than in any public hospital in the dominion, and at times there are as many as 300 patients in the wards. The hospitals at Hanmer, Rotorua, Cashmere and Waipukurau are for special cases. — ODT, 17.1.1921.
