Glenavy, Union register big wins

GLENAVY and Union registered clear wins in the Dick Hunt Trophy in Oamaru club play.

Games were played on Friday night.

Glenavy celebrated its return to the senior ranks with an eightwicke­t win over Valley, while Union defeated Albion at King George Park by 71 runs in the limited overs system.

Valley batted first at

Glenavy against the home side and made for 148 for four, with Shane Dunnett leading the batting effort with a 44ball 68.

Glenavy relished being back on home soil though, and it took only 17.4 overs to reach the target.

Ross McCulloch set the tone with 69 off 33, while opener Stafford Adam played the anchor role to be unbeaten on 25 at the end, guiding the home side to the comfortabl­e win.

Union also appreciate­d being at home and after being sent into bat by Albion made 149 for eight.

Contributi­ons from Brad Fleming (39 not out), Tom Shields (26) and Garry Singh (26) saw the side through to the challengin­g total.

Bowling for Albion, Ricky Whyte took four for 33 and

Matt Finn two for 31.

The Albion batting lineup could only battle through to 78 for eight in reply, with Sam Keno (23) the best of its batsmen.

Union’s Kuljeet Singh, who bowled parsimonio­usly to take three for seven, and Blake Martin who returned two for 14, were the best Union bowlers.
