Housing would be better use of Dowling St
AS the Dowling St car park is being sold off at a fire sale price, will this reduce the land value of the rest of the central business district and reduce the rate take?
Also, what has been the annual financial return from this car park? How will the Dunedin City Council make up for this lost revenue?
No doubt the usual way: increase parking fees.
If this car park was to have another use, it should have been for social housing to overcome a real problem that the city has. This housing could have been used for the construction workers of the new hospital as it is within walking distance of the building site.

Hospital surgeries
I HAVE been hearing lately about serious elective surgeries being delayed in Dunedin.
Yet even with Covid19, other centres are now catching up.
Regardless, the waiting time for hip or knee surgery is significantly higher in the South than north of the great Waitaki River.
If things cannot be sorted soon, how long will it be until the SDHB sees the return of a commissioner? B. Smith Waikouaiti
Wasted cherries
I READ with huge disappointment that many tonnes of raindamaged cherries are being dumped (ODT,
13.1.21).
Why on earth are these cherries not being made into juice?
I will not accept that this is not a practicable option.
Just a disgusting waste. If orchardists only thought outside the small box, a suitable solution to this challenge would be obvious. Noel Pryce
