Milton cooperative society formed
On Monday evening a large attendance of Milton workers met in the Bruce County Chambers to consider further the question of forming a Milton industrial cooperative society. Mr Isaac Robinson, as chairman briefly stated the object of the meeting. Afterwards Messrs Cleary, Peters and Thomson (Dunedin) and Fenton (Kaitangata) addressed the meeting. Mr Cleary told them they would have difficulties to contend with, but like the Dunedin Society, of which he was a director, they would learn that any difficulties
placed in their way could, by their unitedly sticking together, easily be overcome. The Dunedin Society had started with nothing, and was today doing big things. Mr Cleary stated that he knew of a case of a lady recently from Sydney who had been a member of an industrial cooperative there, and whose share of the profits in a comparatively few years had accumulated to over £150. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Miller, it was unanimously decided to form a Milton Industrial Cooperative Society, the provisional committee of management to be Mesdames Boyle and McPherson, and Messrs Boyle, Ferguson, Milne, Nicol, Robinson, with power to add to their number. After the meeting the committee met and elected Mr Boyle as president and Mr Isaac Robinson as secretary.
