Two to contest vacated council seat

A BYELECTION for a vacant Clutha District Council seat is to take place, after two nominations were received.

Tapanui residents Lloyd McCall and Gabrielle Mills put their names forward by the deadline of 12 noon yesterday, and will vie for one of two West Otago ward seats, which was vacated by St John volunteer Michelle Kennedy last month.

Mr McCall, a rural consultant, stood unsuccessfully for the Molyneux ward of Otago Regional Council in the 2019 local government elections.

Mrs Mills is a registered nurse and counsellor for Gore Health.

The winner will represent West Otago alongside incumbent councillor and farmer John Herbert, of Heriot, and replace Mrs Kennedy, following a 10year period of unbroken service to the council.

The byelection will conclude at noon, Wednesday, March 17.
