A visitor from Norway

-

An interesting visitor to New Zealand from a far country is Mr O. Borgen MBE, of Stavanger, Norway, who, with Mrs Borgen, returned to Dunedin, last night after a brief visit to Queenstown and Paradise. Mr Borgen represents an influential group of Norwegian fish canneries, and on his travels is combining business with pleasure. He is, as a matter of fact, the first packer from Norway to visit New Zealand, where he hopes to extend the market for the small fish commonly known as sardines, but which are really bredshing and silt. Australia and New Zealand have always been good customers for Norwegian canned fish.

Mr Borgen has been much impressed by the prosperous appearance of the country with its smiling farmers and huge flocks of fat sheep. He commented on the “modesty” of the people, a term he explained by saying that the country people seemed to put all their money into land and flocks and very little indeed into houses and personal comforts.

Queenstown, Mr Borgen declares, is one of the most beautiful spots he has ever seen — a lovely peaceful place. They were exceedingly fortunate the previous day, as they saw from the boat in beautiful weather Mount Earnslaw clad in white — a marvellous sight against the blue sky. — ODT, 21.1.1921.
