Climate plan vote this week
SOUTHLAND’S regional council will soon vote on whether to affirm its approach in developing a climate action plan.
Environment Southland voted in 2019 to not declare a climate emergency, as others had done, but to develop an action plan.
A report to councillors for an upcoming meeting summarises actions taken towards crafting it.
A working group of four councillors was formed and in July last year, a preliminary plan was updated after feedback from staff and councillors.
A full council workshop had also been scheduled for February, to discuss future initiatives and the development of a regional climate change strategy.
This would provide an opportunity for discussion which would include councillors’ role, challenges and direction of developing a strategy.
The vote would be at a ordinary meeting of council on January 27.
