Currie’s super time not enough for victory

- STAFF REPORTER

WANAKA triathlete Braden Currie broke the course record at the Tauranga Half ironman on Saturday but it was not enough to win the race.

Currie finished 10 seconds behind Kyle Smith, of Taupo.

Both broke the record by more than 2min with Smith recording 3hr 39 min 43 sec.

It was the first time any athlete had gone under the 3hr 40min mark in a half ironman in New Zealand.

Currie was behind by more than 3min at the start of the run but gave his all and nearly got within touching distance near the end, but the finish line came too soon.

His next race is the Taupo Ironman on March 6.
