Checkpoints to resume
Kawakawa: Te Tai Tokerau border control will be operating road checkpoints in Northland from today — without police support.
The border control operated checkpoints during last year’s Covid19 lockdowns, and spokesman Hone Harawira said they were needed again, but police would not help.
In a statement, Inspector Riki Whiu, of Northland police, said police were not aware of the group’s plans to reestablish checkpoints in the region.
‘‘Police respect and recognise the good intentions of the group. However, while New Zealand remains in Alert Level 1 police do not believe there is any requirement for checkpoints at this time.’’
