Love to lead US team

Golf: Twotime Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III will captain the United States team when it hosts the Presidents Cup against the International Team in his home town of Charlotte in 2022.

The former PGA Championship winner was confirmed as captain yesterday by organisers and the PGA Tour, having led the US to one win and one loss in the Ryder Cup against Europe.

Tiger Woods was playing captain when the US defeated the rest of the world in the last Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia in 2019.

Woods called Love to inform him he was the new captain.

‘‘He just said, ‘Hey, congratulations. You’re going to be the next Presidents Cup captain’,’’ Love said.

The 56yearold becomes the ninth US captain since the competition was established in 1994. — DPA
