Dead Rockers Ball rocks Fairfield
‘‘DEAD rockers are gone, but not forgotten.’’
It was writing that lyric that inspired Dunedin band Bulletproof Convertible to tour a Dead Rockers Ball around the country.
The fourth gig since their tour began in Glenorchy, before the Covid19 lockdown in March last year, was held at the Fairfield Community Hall on Saturday evening.
It attracted a crowd of about 110 people, who dressed as their favourite dead rock stars, including Prince, Michael Jackson and Dr Hook.
The band’s double bass player, Paul Southworth, said it was a ‘‘cracking good night’’.
‘‘I think the Glenorchy gig had about 60 people — so it has just got more and more.’’
The hall was packed with Fairfield locals, as well as people who had travelled from Waitati, where the last dead rockers gig was held, to attend for a second time.
Southworth said he and band members Alex Ramsay (drums) and Silas Waring (vocals and guitar) had discussed wanting to hold an ‘‘old school’’ rock ball, but it was when Waring wrote the lyric ‘‘dead rockers are gone, but not forgotten’’ that the idea came to life.
While the next destination for the rock ’n’ roll tour had not been confirmed, the band had its sights on Hawea Flat, Oamaru, Rangiora, and Nelson.
‘‘Our plan was to tour it all throughout the country in all the crazy halls — the crazier the better,’’ Southworth said.
