Victory for Oamaru in close tussle with Waitaki Boys’

- TERRY O’NEILL

OAMARU snatched an 11run victory over a newlook Waitaki Boys’ First XI in cold windy conditions at Whitestone Contracting stadium on Saturday.

Oamaru’s Robbie Breen decided to bat and set Waitaki a target of 247 in its 50 overs, losing eight wickets in the process.

The Oamaru innings was powered by the batting of Jordan Bartlett, who smashed a rollicking 83.

Fanie Nortje (27) and Sarel Smit (59) also contributed.

Leftarmer Sam Petrie took three for 53 while Lochie Mavor, Matt Stewart and George Mavor took a wicket each.

Waitaki Boys’ batsmen Quinn Wardle (57) and Stewart (52) gave the school side hope as it got to where it needed only 12 to win.

But the pressure took its toll, and going for a vital single the last two batsmen both finished at one end; Oamaru was able to take the 10th wicket and vital points.

The best of the Oamaru bowlers was Lakshay Raj Siwach, who took five for 45.

At Glenavy, the home side upset Valley.

Batting first, Glenavy made 181 all out. Rodney van Leeuwen (39) and Jackson Henshaw (23) were the major contributors with the bat, while bowling for Valley Shannon Dunnett took four for 42 while Jake Mathews and Hamish McKenzie took two wickets each.

Valley fell 31 runs short of the Glenavy effort.

Mathews (38) and George Eldridge (26) made runs while Henshaw took three for 33, Van Leeuwen two for 29 and a miserly Kurt Thomas two for eleven.

At St Kevin’s College, its First XI went down to Union.

Batting first, St Kevin’s made 119 runs with Liam Direen (35) the pick of the batsmen while Brad Fleming took four for 12 for Union.

After a shaky start in reply, in which Union was 21 for four, Duncan Drew (34) eventually helped guide it to 120 for eight.

Bowling for St Kevin’s, Jacob Fowler and Harry Murphy took two for 31 and two for 22 respectively.
