Watch your words
I WISH to comment on the use of the word ‘‘fulsome’’ as Otago Daily Times staffer Guy Williams reports it being used by Mike Theelan, of the Queenstown council (ODT, 26.1.21).
Mr Theelan chose the word to describe his report for the council.
A report described as ‘‘fulsome’’ is by definition ‘‘complimentary or flattering to an excessive degree’’. That definition warns one that ‘‘fulsome’’ is not necessarily a kind and gentle adjective.
‘‘Fulsome’’ is a tricky word to use, and can carry unfortunate and unintended implications if one is not careful. Like ‘‘fulminate’’, it can blow up in your face if handled carelessly.
