New military districts established
The Otago and Canterbury Military Districts ceased to exist yesterday and are now merged in the new southern command, which includes the South Island. Colonel Young CB CMG DSO, who commanded the Second Brigade comprising the Otago and Canterbury battalions in France, and now assumes command of the southern district, with temporary headquarters at Christchurch, yesterday gave a general outline of the proposed changes. Each command will now provide a regiment of mounted rifles,
a brigade of artillery, a brigade of infantry and the proportion of technical units required in a mounted brigade and an infantry division. Dunedin will supply artillery and technical units. A permanent South Island training camp will be established at Burnham, where the old Industrial School buildings will form the nucleus of the necessary accommodation. There is an area of 1000 acres attached to Burnham, so that it is regarded as in every way suitable for the purpose.
