Settlers renege on promises

-

At the meeting of the Bruce County Council yesterday, Cr Russell referred in strong terms to the action of a number of those who had promised financial aid in connection with putting the BalcluthaPukepito Riverside road into a condition to carry motor traffic not standing by their undertaking. The then member for the riding (the late Mr J. Begg, chairman of the council) had died, and now some subscribers to the work were backing out. Cr Clark characterised the action of these people as dishonest, and Cr Scott, while refusing to go as far as that, said that their action was at any rate not honourable. Cr Russell pointed out that if payment was not forthcoming the riding would have to bear the cost; the county could not be expected to do so. The whole thing looked like a “sort of have”, as if people had wanted to get the road open and then when it was open had decided to “let the council go to Hong Kong”. — ODT, 2.2.1921.
