Jobless rate surprises

Wellington: New Zealand’s official unemployment dropped to 4.9% in the December quarter — from 5.3%.

Economists had expected a rise to about 5.6%.

The number of unemployed people is still 25,000 higher than it was a year ago, increasing from 116,000 in the December 2019 quarter (a rise of 21.9%). — The New Zealand Herald
