Duncan on mend, ‘good to go’ in couple of weeks

MOTOCROSS

- ADRIAN SECONI

WORLD champion Courtney Duncan is ‘‘a bit banged up’’ but she will be ‘‘good to go’’ in a couple of weeks.

She was forced to withdraw from the New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix event at Woodville last weekend after she crashed in the leadup to the event.

The twotime Women’s Motocross World Championship series winner crashed during race in Taranaki late last month.

She flipped over her handlebars and landed heavily on her face.

Duncan ended up spending her 25th birthday on the couch feeling pretty sore but was not suffering any concussion symptoms.

A scan revealed further good news — there were no fractures.

‘‘Everything is looking good so that is positive,’’ Duncan said.

‘‘Obviously, I’ll be laying low for a couple of weeks and then we should be good to go. I’m just a bit banged up.

‘‘Anytime you land face first or on your head, it is not really ideal. So just with the injuries in the past we wanted to be careful and not rush it, especially when the main goal is to win another world championship.

‘‘We want to be right for that, so I’m taking a few weeks off just to let the body heal.’’

The Women’s Motocross World Championship series’ aspirational start date is scheduled for late April in Italy.

But Duncan said the start date had not been confirmed and the Covid19 situation meant there was not a lot of certainty around the season schedule.

‘‘Things are not picking up over there at the moment — they are probably getting worse if anything. Obviously, that affects sporting events as well.

‘‘There is no confirmed start date but hopefully we’ll hear some news soon. They are saying it is going to be a little later start this year.

‘‘There was a lot of uncertainty last year and it will the same this year.’’
