All teams in contention but tough task for Marist

- JOHN LANGFORD

WITH three more rounds of Southland club cricket to play, all six clubs are still in contention for the finals of the 50over premier league.

Qualifying will be most difficult for defending champion Marist.

After winning its first 50over game of the season last week, Marist was smashed back to earth by Invercargill Old Boys at Queens Park on Saturday.

Old Boys bowler Blake Tempero ripped through the Marist top order. Included in Tempero’s fivewicket haul was danger man Shaun Fitzgibbon.

Marist was dismissed for just 103. Jeremy Boyle was the main provider with 36 runs.

Tempero finished his 10 overs with figures of five wickets for 34.

Old Boys took just 13 overs to reach the total with eight wickets to spare. Opener Satwinder Singh made an unbeaten 63 from 36 balls.

Waikoikoi beat Appleby by 114 runs in Invercargill.

The visiting side batted first and made 264 for seven from 50 overs. The top six batsmen all made solid contributions, the highest scorers being Kurt Thompson (40), Liam McFaul (39) and Jared McKenzie (36), before No 8 batsman Nic Reed finished the innings off with an unbeaten 42 from 24 balls.

Hamish Cooke then took five wickets for 15 runs as Appleby was bundled out for 150.

Calum Johnstone topscored for Appleby with 33.

Metropolitan versus Southland Boys High School was postponed until the end of the month, due to SBHS being away at the Willows in Christchurch.

Central Western had another big win in the division one competition, this time in Te Anau. Central made 253 from its 40 overs thanks to an unbeaten century by Thomas Beggs.

Beggs’ score of 132 from 93 balls included 16 boundaries. James Wadsworth (59) chipped away at the other end.

Te Anau’s chase got off to a good start due to Alex Webster (51), but the locals then capitulated for a total of 115. Ashleigh Harrison took five wickets for just 14 runs.
