Weather warnings are in place as heavy snow and cold winds are forecast from Russia, with even central London due for wintry showers.

BBC Weather forecaster Nick Miller predicted a ‘‘very cold week to come’’ with day temperatures close to freezing, and overnight frost making it feel colder still.

The greatest prospect of significant falls of snow and disruption were in the southeast of England, eastern England, the Midlands and the North East, he added. Some areas would get ‘‘shower after shower, with snow building up’’.
