Shand challenges world record
THE Municipal Tepid Baths were again crowded last night, when the New Zealand swimming championships were continued. Some splendid races were witnessed, and again and again great excitement prevailed. The event of the night was the breaking of the world’s record (6min 42sec) for the ladies’ 440 yards, Miss Gwitha Shand, of Christchurch, again showing remarkable power and leaving Miss V. Walrond, the Olympic representative, well in the rear. Miss Shand’s time does not reach that credited to the American swimmer,
Miss E. Bleibtrey, at Christchurch in January, but that has not yet been approved. If it is not, and Miss Shand’s time is approved, then the Canterbury swimmer will hold the title. This was the first 440 yards national ladies’ championship in New Zealand.
