Gun amnesty ends

Apia: Almost 200 illegal guns have been handed in by people in Samoa in a gun amnesty which ended on Wednesday.

A total of 198 weapons were collected. The firearms comprised rifles, pistols, and shotguns. Ammunition items totalling 686 for the various firearms were also handed to the police.

Police Commission­er Fuiavailil­i Egon Keil said the operation had been successful.

For each firearm handed into police, the owner was given a food voucher, Fuiavailil­i said. — RNZ
