IN a notunfamiliar report, a violent assault in Queenstown has occurred (ODT, 30.1.21). Noted social commentator Bob Dylan sang of ‘‘fools making laws for the breaking of jaws while the law looks the other way’’. After reportage for so long of aftermidnight violence, may the lawmakers limit the opening times of bars to midnight.

I WAS disgusted to read that some irresponsible yobs had driven aggressively though the redbilled gull colony at Taiaroa Head (ODT,
8.2.21). I sincerely hope that the CCTV footage helps identify them, and that the full force of the law descends on them — not a slight slap on the wrist, which has been too often the case in the past for similar acts of vandalism.
