Gorillas in zoo recover from virus
SAN DIEGO: Gorillas at San Diego Zoo Safari Park have recovered from a bout of Covid19, zoo officials have announced.
The eightmember troop had been out of view to visitors after contracting the virus in January, in what was believed to be the first case of transmission to primates. During that time, they received care from experts in both human and veterinary medicine.
‘‘We’re so grateful for the outpouring concern and support we’ve received while the troop safely recovered,’’ zoo executive director Lisa Peterson said.
The troop was likely exposed to the Covid19 by a keeper who tested positive for the virus in early January. Although zoo employees followed recommended biosecurity precautions, some staff members tested positive for the virus on January 11, zoo officials said.
Shortly afterward, several gorillas began coughing, and all the troop members appeared lethargic; park staff tested the animals and fecal samples for Covid19 and received positive results. — TCA
