THE southern sporting theatre shifts to Central Otago this weekend as events take place inland.
Challenge Wanaka is on tomorrow as about 800 competitors line up to swim, run and cycle themselves into the ground. A new course has been mapped out for the athletes around Glendhu Bay. A top battle between Wanaka athlete Braden Currie and Taupo's Kyle Smith is expected in the elite men's category.
Challenge Wanaka is preceeded today by a junior triathlon at Lake Wanaka, involving about 900 junior and intermediate schoolchildren.
Over the hill in Queenstown, the Shotover Moonlight Mountain Marathon and trail runs will take place tomorrow. Entrants will face the challenging and diverse terrain of Ben Lomond Station near Queenstown.
Under the Remarkables, the Otago Volts face the Canterbury Kings in one-day games at the John Davies Oval today and on Sunday. The 50-over matches are part of the start of the second half of the Ford Trophy, in which Otago is handily placed on the ladder having four games left to play.
In Alexandra, the Highlanders return to Molyneux Park today to take on the Hurricanes in their final preseason match.
The Highlanders are fielding all their stars while the Hurricanes are also bringing out their frontliners, Ardie Savea making his captaincy debut and brother Julian Savea back in the Hurricanes colours.
The match kicks off at 6pm.
