Fast times recorded on new course at Glendhu Bay
A SHIFT to a new location, a beautiful day on the lake and a record entry list led to a big day out at the Otago secondary schools triathlon championships yesterday.
The event was held at Glendhu Bay this year in Lake Wanaka for the first time and more than 280 competitors from all over Otago lined up.
Competitors in the under16 and under14 races had to complete a 300m swim, then a 10km bike ride followed by a 3.5km run.
The under19 competitors completed a 400m swim followed by a 20km cycle race and finishing with a 4km swim.
Conditions were ideal for the swim and some fast times were recorded on the new course.
In the under14 boys grade, William Schurink won followed by fellow Mount Aspiring College pupil Kezik Magill.
Baxter Dimond, of Cromwell College, was third.
In the under14 girls grade, Catty David, of Mount Aspiring College, was first with Melanie Button, of Columba College, second and Ariana Webb, of Cromwell College, third.
The under16 boys grade was won by Harry Summers, of Otago Boys’ High School, ahead of Zavier Taylor and Tom Sides, both from Mount Aspiring College.
Catherine Lund, of Otago Girls’ High School, won the under16 girls grade ahead of Madison Cockburn, of St Hilda’s Collegiate.
Anya Rhodes, of Columba College, was third.
John McGlashan College pupil Grayson Westgate won the under19 grade ahead of Mount Aspiring College’s McKay Watson with Matheson Colquhoun, of McGlashan, in third place.
The winner of the girls under19 grade was Hannah Prosser, of Mount Aspiring College, ahead of Rebecca De La Harpe, of Otago Girls’ High School. Shinae Stanley, of Taieri College, was third.
