More Otago qualifiers

PLENTY of Otago crews will compete for titles at Lake Ruataniwha today.

Several crews from the region joined those already qualified for the A finals yesterday at the national rowing championships.

Dunstan Arm will be the most prolific of those clubs, and has put itself in a position to return home with plenty of medals.

The club had already qualified several crews for the finals and added a handful yesterday, notably in the women’s sculling races.

Eva Hofmans and Mackenzie Ealson finished second in their senior double sculls heat to make the final.

In the club grade, Sophie Smith made the single sculls final and paired with Kirsty Mahone to make the double sculls final.

In the intermediate grade, Marzella de Beer and Mackenzie Bryant took a comfortable win in their double sculls semifinal.

Wanaka’s Pipi Horan and Emily Findlay won the other semifinal and set up an intriguing local derby.

Horan also impressed in the single sculls, winning her semifinal to advance alongside Otago’s Grace Twaddle, who finished second.

Otago Boys’ High School’s Reuben Cook continued his strong form, winning his single sculls semifinal and teaming with William Haley to win the double sculls.

Finals begin this morning.
