Willow removal has caused much damage to rivers

-

THE Lindis Catchment Group is looking for further funding to remove more willows (ODT, 11.2.21).

In my opinion, any extra funding should be spent fixing damage already caused, such as loss of shade and cover due to willow removal.

According to NZ Landcare Trust (2015), willows are the best plant to provide stability to river banks and help control serious erosion. Their deep roots help hold river banks together.

Among the many other benefits of live willows are eels and other fish shelter among their roots. Removing them can cause other problems like bank collapse or weed invasion.

During 50 years of fishing the Shag and Waikouaiti rivers, I have witnessed the destruction of some of the best trout habitat from sedimentation and lack of shade following willow removal.

A visit to the Lindis river in 2005 showed a similar effect on habitat with no trout seen in 1.5km.

If only dead wood was removed without damaging the river bed or banks, that would be a good outcome. Mike Rawlinson

Hyde hotel

ARRIVING at Hyde during Waitangi weekend, we were surprised and disappointed to see a rather dilapidated exterior to the Otago Central Hotel, with no cafe or other amenities available.

This icon had been an integral part of the rail trail experience. It was once a wonderful, thriving oasis along the trail, supplying food and accommodation, and was enjoyed by travellers from throughout the world.

We understand that this deterioration began five years ago when the current owner, who hadn’t been in the area long, decided not to operate the business any more.

Apparently, people have offered to buy or lease the property to reinstate the business, but these offers have been refused.

What a tragedy for the area, for travellers and for the Otago Central Rail Trail.
