Greene back up there after 800m 3rd placing

- JEFF CHESHIRE

REBEKAH Greene has shown she is right back among New Zealand’s top 800m runners.

The Hill CityUniversity runner ran a time of 2min 10.68sec to finish third in a quality race at the Capital Classic in Wellington on Saturday.

Greene trailed Canterbury’s Katherine Camp and Auckland’s Sophie Atkinson by half a second in a tight finish.

Meanwhile Taieri’s Zharna Beattie threw 44.91m to finish second in the women’s discus. North Harbour Bays’ Savannah Scheen was a comfortable winner with 53.80m.

Hill City-University’s Anna Grimaldi continued her strong summer, recording 5.71m in the long jump.

While not as far as the personal bests she has set in the past two weeks, it was another jump further than her startofseason personal best.

Meanwhile Christchurch Old Boys United’s Hamish Kerr set a New Zealand men’s highjump record, clearing 2.31m.

He previously held the 2.30m record with Glenn Howard.

At the Caledonian Ground Ariki’s Shay Veitch delivered two impressive displays.

The 20yearold ran a blistering 10.55sec 100m, although the run was slightly windassisted.

It is a time that edges him ever closer to New Zealand’s top sprinters, including Eddie OseiNketia — who ran a 10.69sec 100m into a slight headwind at the Capital Classic.

Veitch also set a Caledonian Ground record of 7.61m in the long jump, showing plenty of consistency after jumping 7.63m a week ago in Hamilton.

Taieri’s Ben Baines also had a recordbreaking day, setting a national F37 para javelin record of 32.97m.

HCU’s Tony Tan broke Masters 55 records in both the 100m and 200m of 12.49sec and 25.89sec respectively.

Renee Willis (HCU) threw 13.32m to set Otago women’s 15 and 16 years records in the shot put.

Meanwhile in the 5000m race, which doubled as the Otago championships, Leith’s Janus Staufenberg ran 14min 28.46sec to win by well over a minute.

Leith’s Olivia Gold claimed the women’s title in 19min 55.71 sec.
