Time to change this ‘laughable’ speed situation

- I. Williams Ravensbourne

I NOTE with interest the many letters written on the Wanaka speedlimit debacle, in particular by Richard Paxman and John Reid (Letters, 1.4.21).

It is interesting that the Queenstown Lakes District Council has been unable to produce the accident rate information requested. One can only assume the agenda has nothing to do with safety, apparently there being no evidence backing the changes implemented.

Most would agree that parts of Ardmore and Helwick Sts deserve the 30kmh limit as appropriate and acceptable. However, the absolute absurdity of 40kmh, 50kmh and 70kmh changes all over town is laughable.

If one travels on Ballantyne Rd toward town, it goes from 50kmh to 40kmh then up to 70kmh on Golf

Course Rd, all within just a few metres.

The speed changes may be hazardous as one has to constantly look out for speed change zones (signs) and speed cameras then watch one’s speed, providing limited time to watch the road.

Common sense is becoming a rare commodity. What were they thinking, or do they receive the revenue that is being collected?

Let’s just have 50kmh speed limits all around town, excluding parts of Ardmore and Helwick Sts.

Council document

AS an elderly (86) male ratepayer, I want to congratulate Dunedin’s mayor for the fullcolour, bilingual mail drop, ‘‘The Future of Us’’, delivered into my mailbox; very upmarket, I thought, or upratepayers if you like.

It’s good he’s thinking 10, 20, 50 years ahead. Since the typeface is one size away from being invisible, readers can take their pick from possible content material: city bankruptcy being the prime possibility.

Oh, well. There’s always city ratepayers to fall back on. Or swords, if you have one handy.
