Four age group records set by Otago athletes at SISS champs

FOUR recordbreaking performances highlighted a strong weekend for Otago schools on the track.
The province’s athletes were prominent among the winners at the South Island secondary schools track and field championships in Christchurch on Friday and Saturday.
Otago Boys’ High School claimed two records.
Manaia Lesa ran an impressive 11.82sec in the 100m preliminary round to take 0.05sec off the existing under14 boys 100m record. He went on to run 11.98sec to win the final.
Luke Moffitt also claimed a record for Otago Boys’. His height of 3.4m put 19cm on the under16 boys pole vault record.
Columba College’s Alexa Duff had an impressive day in the under15 girls discus. Her throw of 38.58m beat the previous record of 38.22m, while she also claimed a title in the hammer throw.
Logan Park High School’s Jake Hibbert’s 33.48m added a huge 3.4m to the under14 boys hammer throw record.
They were among a long list of Otago athletes who claimed South Island titles at the championships.
Among those were several relay teams.
Lesa and Moffitt were both in the titlewinning Otago Boys’ under16 4x100m team which included Levi Heffernan and William Ryan.
Queen’s High School’s quartet of Malia Corson, Sarah Donaldson, Jorja Gibbons and Molly Goldsmith took first in the under15 girls 4x100m.
Mt Aspiring College once again showed its prowess in the girls’ grades. It claimed first in the under19 4x100m (runners were not provided).
In the under16 girls grade it also claimed the title in the 4x400m, its team of Niamh Townsend, Chantel Thurston, Estelle Gellatly and Millie East showing its class.
On top of that there was a long list of individual titles claimed by athletes from schools around the region.
