Vendor of cheap meat held dear

-

TO the editor: Sir, The present fall in the price of meat recalls to me what happened about 50 years ago. Meat was dear; legs of mutton were one shilling per pound and other parts in proportion. A great change was brought about by a well known character in those days, Jock Graham, selling sides of mutton of firstclass quality by auction for cash in Dunedin’s saleyards, now the site of the DIC shop in Rattray street. When a boy I often secured a cheap side of mutton to help feed a large family.

One good line “Jock” sold was, as he

called them, “tongues that never told a lie.’’ — I am, etc, Old Identity, St Clair, April 14.
