Opening of Lake Dunstan cycle trail
A whole new way of enjoying the spectacular views of Central Otago while cycling or walking will begin when the Lake Dunstan Trail opens on Saturday, May 8.
Central Otago Queenstown Trail Network Trust chairman Stephen Jeffery said the trail linked to the Otago Central Rail Trail and formed part of the great rides in Central Otago and the Southern Lakes.
The trail cost about $7 million with funding from the Central Lakes Trust, the Otago Community Trust and the Government.
Work on constructing the 58km trail began in June 2019.
The 58km trail began at Smith’s Way, near Pisa Moorings and followed the Lake Dunstan shore to Cromwell and the Bannockburn Bridge.
Then it crossed the bridge and followed the lake around the Bannockburn Inlet, then true right of Lake Dunstan to the Dunstan Arm Rowing Club, near the Clyde Dam.
The trail will be officially opened to the public with a ribboncutting in Clyde followed by community celebrations in Cromwell.
Ten local cyclists will be the first riders on the trail, then it will be open for all to ride the trail from the Clyde end.
The Grand Opening celebrations take place at the Cromwell Heritage Precinct from noon till 5pm. Cromwell and Districts Promotion Group community relationships manager Gretchen Nightingale said the precinct will be filled with live entertainment, delicious street food, and a selection of local wine.
“It’ll be the perfect spot for supporters to enjoy the afternoon while waiting on their cyclists to complete the trail.”
