Extensive roadworks set to wind down as winter nears

EXTENSIVE roadworks activity in Dunedin should soon tail off.

Footpath kerb and channel work in Kaikorai Valley Rd is expected to be finished within two weeks.

Completion of another prominent project — Forbury Rd intersection improvements in South Dunedin — is due next month.

Dunedin City Council contractors were busy delivering their annual schedules of kerb, footpath and road surface work across the city, infrastructure services general manager Simon Drew said.

‘‘This generally requires some yearround work, weather permitting, although late summer and autumn is peak construction season before some types of work slow down during the winter months,’’ Mr Drew said.

The council was committed to improving on the delivery of its planned spending, he said.

Work in Kaikorai Valley Rd has caused some disruption to traffic in the past week.

Mr Drew said that work was routine road renewals and it would soon be finished.

The intersection of Forbury, Bay View and Allandale Rds, in St Clair, is where a peanutshaped intersection is planned.

Water upgrades delayed roadworks in the St Clair area, pushing out the scheduled completion date from Christmas last year until June this year.

Business owners commented the work had seemed to drag on for a long time.

Sandra Millar said customers had avoided the area, even though shops were open.

‘‘I know the job had to be done, but there seems to have been such slow progress,’’ Mrs Millar said.

‘‘I think people are losing patience.’’

Forbury Pharmacy owner Kim Wallis said communication about progress on the project had seemed to be lacking.

Contractors started digging up Tyne St in Mosgiel this week.

Mr Drew said Tyne St was an old concrete footpath with trip hazards and the footpath was considered to be below acceptable standards.

Improvements in Wilkie Rd, Kensington, and Park Rd, Warrington, have been completed.
