Two Otago sides undefeated

IT was a clean sweep for the Otago sides on the ice this weekend.

The Dunedin Thunder and Queenstown’s Stampede won both games in their National Ice Hockey League doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.

The Thunder beat the Canterbury Red Devils 72 and 60 in Dunedin on Friday and Saturday respectively.

The Stampede claimed an 84 victory over the West Auckland Admirals on Friday, before claiming a tighter 43 win on Saturday night.

On Friday, the Thunder scored the final five goals to pull away after a close opening.

Jacob Hurring and Dylan Devlin had given the Thunder a 20 lead, before Matheson Graham and Jacob Carey hit back for the Devils.

Noah Gregory gave the Thunder the lead back two minutes after Carey’s equaliser early in the third period.

From there, they poured in four thirdperiod goals to run away with victory.

That continued into Saturday’s game as the Thunder scored six unanswered goals, including three in the first period to emerge comfortable victors.

Paris Heyd scored twice, while Hurring, Devlin, Sam Audas and Connor Rolfe all added goals.

The Stampede similarly pulled away as its game against the

Admirals progressed.

Liam Stewart and Nicholas Henderson traded goals, before two from Matt Schneider gave the Stampede a 31 lead.

The Admirals hit back, but the Stampede piled in five more goals — Schneider and Stewart adding another each — to run out a convincing winner.

On Saturday, Connor Harrison and Schneider both scored in the first period to give the Stampede a 20 lead.

The Admirals hit back in the second period through two Frazer Ellis goals, but one to Stefan Amston kept the Stampede ahead.

Ryan Strayer restored the twogoal buffer for the Stampede, before Justin Daigle closed the gap late for the visitors.
