Cantlay just edges Rahm to seal PGA Tour title and its $US15m prize

-

ATLANTA: Patrick Cantlay of the United States matched Jon Rahm’s birdie on the final hole of the Tour Championship to win the PGA Tour’s title yesterday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

That gave Cantlay a 1underpar 69 to cap a riveting finishing stretch between the two.

Rahm’s birdie on the hole meant he finished the round with 68, 20under.

Cantlay checked in at 21under. Under the tournament format Cantlay, as the top seed opened at 10under when the tournament began, four shots clear of Rahm. He needed every one of those strokes to claim the $US15 million ($NZ21.01 million) top prize.

Cantlay won backtoback tournaments to complete the PGA Tour season.

Kevin Na shot 67 to finish third at 16under.

Team Europe’s Mel Reid birdied the 18th hole to draw even with the Americans in the final fourball match yesterday to give the visitors a 97 lead heading into the final day of the Solheim Cup in Toledo, Ohio.

The American team of Jennifer Kupcho and Lizette Salas looked as if they would come out with a full point after rookie Kupcho chipped in for birdie on the 17th. But Reid’s approach shot on the parfour 18th rolled out of the rough lining the green and settled near the cup.

The Englishwoman sank the final putt.

‘‘Leona (Maguire) again played great, kept us in the match, and then I saw a wave of yellow and blue . . . and I knew I had to pull something off,’’ Reid said. — Field Level Media/ Reuters calmly
