Tips for getting the best out of your fire in Clyde
ABOUT 10 years ago Clyde had a bad problem of air polluted by solidfuel home fireplaces.
After there was compulsory replacement with efficient logburners and the banning of coal as a fuel this ceased to be a problem.
Except, I hasten to add, when just two or three households run their fires badly.
They are enough to pollute most of the village's air.
The key elements for getting the best out of the 10year standard clean fires include buying your firewood in December or January, storing it under a waterproof roof with ventilation to add three months of additional drying; buying only willow — which makes almost no ash and has no resins or tars to clog chimneys and create smoke, and running the fire so there is only flame or embers with no smoke in the firebox.
The 10yearold standard logfires will do the job well, provided that people care enough to run them optimally. B. Swale
