Lowburn Hotel razed
Cromwell, May 9: The Lowburn Hotel was practically completely destroyed by fire this morning. The outbreak occurred at about 8:30am in the laundry, and although it first appeared as if the flames were suppressed, the fire had a hold in the ceiling, and, aided by a mild northerly breeze, quickly spread. The outbreak quickly developed and the building was soon a mass of flames. Strenuous efforts by local residents and school children who had assembled minimised the damage to a degree, and a considerable quantity of material was salvaged, but otherwise the place was a total loss. — ODT, 10.5.1922
