Chrysanthemums stand out
Although gardeners and flowergrowers generally have experienced a very unfavourable season as regards weather conditions, the display made at the annual winter show of the Dunedin Horticultural Society, which opened yesterday in the Art Gallery hall, was a very creditable one, the chrysanthemum sections in particular containing some very fine blooms.
The absence of sunshine during the months of March and April and the prevalence of wind have given horticulturists a very bad time, and in the opinion of a prominent grower the past season generally has been one of the worst experienced during the last 25 years. Naturally this state of affairs is reflected in the restricted competition in many of the classes although among the blooms forward there are many fine specimens, and the display of chrysanthemums is well worth inspection.
Owing to the bad season there was practically no competition in the open classes of chrysanthemums, but among the amateurs’ sections competition was very keen, the small margin of half a point often separating the prizewinners. The exhibit put forward by the amateur growers really makes the show, and it is hoped to see them in the open section next year. — ODT,13.5.1922
