Australia wins test, series

THE Black Sticks women were beaten 21 by Australia in another close contest in Auckland yesterday.

Going against the run of play, the home side managed to force a penalty corner from which captain Megan Hull scored with a powerful strike to put the Black Sticks up 10.

However, the Australians retained dominance over the ball and, despite some plucky defending, levelled the scores with a good play into the circle that resulted in the ball sneaking under goalkeeper Brooke Roberts.

The home team remained purposeful in their defensive circle and the sides went to halftime locked at 11.

After the break, Hockeyroo forward Brooke Peris made her way up the field to get on to the end of a pass to lob it over the head of substitute goalkeeper Grace O’Hanlon.

Although the goal stood to give the Australians a 21 lead, the ball did appear to be hit with the back of the stick which means the goal should have been disallowed.

O’Hanlon’s excellence was on display in the second half despite the goal, as she made several strong saves.

The Black Sticks were unable to contain the pace and stamina of the Hockeyroos and could not get on the ball enough to provide a threat at the other end.

The game finished at 21 meaning Australia won the series 20.

Saturday’s test was drawn 11 while Australia won 21 on Thursday after Tuesday’s opening test was drawn 22.
