Boat ramp upgrade set to start
A KEY civic improvement project is expected to begin in Kaitangata shortly.
In July last year, the Clutha District Council approved up to $10,000 funding for improvements to the town’s boat ramp, after it emerged top of the South Otago community’s priorities during consultation.
A group of eager volunteers led by local man Blair Thompson has since been champing at the bit to begin work.
Before that could happen, Otago Regional Council had to complete riverbank protection work in the Clutha adjoining the boat ramp, which it finished recently.
Mr Thompson said boat ramp improvements were now scheduled to begin in about a fortnight, when tides were optimal.
‘‘The boat ramp surface is pretty broken up, so we’re planning to pour a new one and make it suitable for the many users at this entry point.
‘‘The plans also include a pavilion with picnic tables and a barbecue, all of which will be available for community and visitor use.’’
The popularity of the facility was reflected in the large number of volunteers who had stepped forward, he said.
‘‘We’ve got a big team keen to get started on this, who’ll be volunteering their time, expertise and equipment to what’s a great community project.’’
The boat ramp was used year round, for water sports, duckshooting, whitebaiting and fishing access, Mr Thompson said.
‘‘It’s a good, deep piece of the river, so it’s ideal for all types of vessel.’’
The project is one of eight areas identified for improvement during the council’s Our Place Kaitangata Community Plan consultation earlier last year.
Other projects include improvements to walking and cycling amenities, Kaitangata pool, Victoria Park, the War Memorial Reserve, public toilets, roading and the Wangaloa Domain.
