Green waste blackened by fire

-

A digger uncovers a hot spot as firemen hose down the smouldering remains of a large green waste fire at a green waste disposal site in Burnside yesterday afternoon.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said the fire crews had battled the blaze overnight.

The initial call about the McLeod Rd fire came in at 8.30pm on Saturday . It was in a pile of green waste measuring 20m by 10m, and 6m high.

Yesterday, two diggers and a forestry crew were helping to sift through the remains.

The spokesman said fire crews left about 4pm yesterday, although firemen would visit the site again today to ensure no hot spots would threaten to flare up again.

Early last Monday, a fire crew from Lookout Point attended a compost heap fire at the same location.

This fire was not considered to be suspicious.
