Diversity talk only shows dysfunctionality

-

I NOTE with despair the concerns being expressed about the lack of ‘‘diversity’’ around the Otago Regional Council table (ODT, 25.5.22).

I have been labouring under the delusion that the ORC is actually a business of sorts, spending my hardearned money (and yours) in order to ensure that the human species and the environment get along harmoniously in this wonderful province of ours.

To this end, I would have thought that ORC councillors would need to have some business savvy, and also some understanding of science, so that rational decisions might be made. Until now I hadn’t realised that gender, race, religion or creed (seemingly) assume equal importance.

There is such a myriad of human attitudes, beliefs and behavioural propensities existing in our community that to have all of them represented around the table at the ORC would surely be a recipe for terminal dysfunctionality. Jack Crawford

PERHAPS Otago Regional councillor Alexa Forbes should be a white middleaged male, then she wouldn't have to spend so much time worrying about diversity around the council table.

And perhaps more real work and decisions would be made, for the betterment of Otago.

Instead of this constant drivel of diversity, culture, skin colour or gender, less talk about being ‘‘fit for purpose’’ and actually getting on with the job might ensure a bit more respect for this disjointed council.

Best ‘‘man’’ for the job I say! Neville McLay
