Name change could endanger those engaging

FURTHER to Pam Jemmett (Letters, 26.7.22). The same deflection applies to Wakari Hospital which could pose a danger for those people wishing to engage with our Mental Health Services. There is smug arrogance underlying media lead, Charlotte Gendall’s response to Ms Jemmett which doesn’t bode well for our general population. Is the transition to Health New Zealand for the provision of better health outcomes, to be at the disposal of bureaucracy? Is it for the convenience of hierarchical officialdom, or is it for us? It appears that there are many ways to subvert democracy.

FOR a journalist/communication expert to deliberately not reply to the question posed is embarrassing use of power. The lady simply asked why no bilingual greeting, Gendall ‘‘feels supported and welcome’’ is highly unlikely. If in distress, not sure if you have accidentally rung the wrong number/ service and suddenly no greeting you understand or recognise? Repeat question, same answer? What discussion/referendum was held with any community as to the name change? How can she claim they are tailored to a particular community? Same problem for a member of my family today.

IF, as Pam Jemmett says (Letters, 26.7.22), that after two repeats of the telephone answer she had to ask (in English) whether she had reached the Dunedin Hospital telephone.

I have to wonder just what two languages the answerer uses to make people right around New Zealand feel ‘‘welcomed and supported’’, as claimed by the health department media lead person.
