Standard of State Highway unacceptable

-

AS a frequent user of State Highway 1 between Dunedin and Balclutha, I was interested to see more patches being applied recently to this route.

During summer months tar bleeding in many places has left large stretches with very little chip.

This puts drivers at risk of aquaplaning during braking or turning.

In several places, signs warn drivers of ‘‘slippery conditions when wet’’.

This stretch of highway has a high level of heavy vehicle use and has an above average road fatality record.

Is ongoing patching the best outcome users of this state highway can expect?

Being familiar with other sections of SH1, I would rank the surface condition of this particular route as below minimum standard.

Could someone from Waka Kotahi comment?

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, Coastal Otago senior network manager Chris Harris replies:

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is renewing about 12 lane kilometres on SH1 between Braeside and Balclutha in the upcoming 22/23 spring/summer construction season.

Part of the preparation for this work is the completion of prereseal repairs to ensure the best outcome for the full renewal work, which can only be done in the warmer, drier months.

The patches referred to as bleeding, lacking chip and having ‘‘slippery when wet’’ signage are identified through our annual highway condition surveys, signposted as a temporary measure and programmed for treatment as soon as we can to restore the surface texture and grip.

We have recently started these patch repairs in the Clutha District.

We appreciate everyone’s care around these patches of highway and look forward to a positive work programme over summer. ...................................
