CDK amalgamation formalised

- ADRIAN SECONI

THE clubs formerly known as Kaikorai and CarisbrookDunedin have formalised their merger.

They agreed to a trial amalgamation two years ago on the proviso they could pull out if it was not working.

But with two Dunedin premier banners in two years and a sound administrative structure in place, the clubs have opted to make the arrangement permanent.

Carisbrook Dunedin Kaikorai Cricket Club (CDK) vicepresident Charlie Hantler said the clubs had used the past two years to ‘‘establish a really strong administrative base with a good committee’’.

‘‘It is something we are really confident we’ve got right, and we’ve got good people in place to ensure there is a foundation for the club.

‘‘All of us who are involved on the committee have been involved with either Kaikorai or CarisbrookDunedin for years, if not decades in some cases.’’

Preserving the history of the clubs was something the committee had been ‘‘really conscious of’’.

‘‘Both clubs have really proud histories with a lot of Black Caps and Otago representatives over the years . . . and we want to preserve key aspects of each club’s original identity.’’

CDK will continued to be based out of both Bishopscourt and Tonga Park. The grass wicket at Bishopscourt generally takes longer in the season before it is ready, so having two surfaces to play on has been a bonus.

‘‘For now we are going to use both and get the benefit out of both.’’

But there is talk of creating a sports hub at Bishopscourt and, if that goes ahead, it could become the permanent base.

CDK expects to field five teams in the four grades this summer.

The Kaikorai junior club will continue to operate as a separate entity.
